“I wanted to prove that I’m champion,” Kobayashi said. “A champion will stand up to any battle.” —

Kobayashi, a six-time world hot dog eating champion from Japan, consumed 5 3/4 P’zones in a six-minute span of chaotic consumption Saturday to edge Chestnut. The 25-year-old from San Jose, Calif., wolfed down 5 1/2 P’zones on Stage 15 at Sony Studios.

“Beard was the quintessential American cook. Well-educated and well-traveled during his eighty-two years, he was familiar with many cuisines but he remained fundamentally American. He was a big man, over six feet tall, with a big belly, and huge hands. An endearing and always lively teacher, he loved people, loved his work, loved gossip, loved to eat, loved a good time” —

Julia Child speaking of James Beard.

I think that this is what all good eaters should strive to be; well-rounded, friendly, and most of all, love to eat.

“In 2008 the survey showed there was an overall loss of 35.2% of the U. S. colonies over winter, or nearly 860,000. That’s up 10% from the previous year. Of these 29% died from CCD, according to the published numbers, or right about a quarter million lost to CCD. That was a downward trend, which was encouraging, if you can think that losing a quarter million colonies is encouraging.” —

Thedailygreen.com reports on the staggering loss of bees last winter.  It seems that commercial beekeepers have lost more than the smaller operations due to the stress that the large operation puts on the bees.

So get some bees and put ‘em in your yard!

Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest Next Weekend!

Rachel at the City Pages reminds us (if it’s not already circled in red on your calendar) that June 6th is the midwest qualifier for the most famous eating competition in the world.  I don’t know who’s going to show up, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut? (‘Joey Chestnut is truly an American hero and a national treasure.’ - IFOCE profile) The lovable, yet moronic Eater X? or my favorite, Eric “Badlands” Booker? (you can get his album ‘Hungry & Focused’ at his website).

Who knows what June 6th will bring, but get there early, because this is the only IFOCE sanctioned eating event in Minnesota this year.

“This year for Christmas I decided to build something out of gingerbread. I didn’t want to build the typical gingerbread house so I decided to do a bridge of some sort. I saw the Oberbaum Bridge in Berlin when we were there in May and thought it would look great built out of gingerbread.” —

I like the way this guy thinks.

He eventually built the bridge with the help of a laser cutter.  Photos and more info here.

“The Italian eatery was recently sued in a class-action lawsuit stemming from a 2006 change to the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, which made it illegal to print more than the last five digits of a customer’s credit card number on a receipt. Olive Garden never stopped its practice of printing the last six digits, and could soon be issuing $9 “apology” vouchers to every customer affected.” —consumerist.com on a mistake that Olive Garden made between 2006-2007.  Yay for free Olive Garden!

The Washington Post has the skinny on cheap steaks.

This article in the Post outlines some inexpensive cuts to cook up this Memorial Day weekend.  There’s even a handy pdf to help.  Just remember, most butchers are closed Sundays, and most likely are closed this Monday, so get your shopping done early.
